Beyond the Role: Portraiture and Identity
As photographers, we often depict the roles our subjects perform—parent, coach, servicemember, office worker—and often neglect to explore the deeper layers of personal identity. Centered on Veteran Identity Portraits, a fine art project helping veterans reclaim who they are beyond the uniform, this work invites individuals into a space where their unique personhood takes center stage. Through storytelling, symbolism, and dignified portraiture, it seeks to reflect identity—not just the roles they’ve played. In this presentation, Jeff Jackson shares the why, the how, and the impact—showing what it means to see someone beyond the roles they perform.
 
Bio:
 
Jeff Jackson is a portrait and wildlife photographer, educator, and retired military veteran. Based in Colorado, he uses photography to help clients reconnect with their identity, dignity, and humanity—especially in times of transition. His Veteran Identity Portraits project invites veterans to be seen not just for what they’ve done, but for who they are as individuals. Jeff co-teaches nationally with Shannon Squires on the intersection of science, art, and meaning, offering photographers tools to create work that resonates on both personal and cultural levels.
